Liberation through Self Awareness
Building emotionally intelligent environments where people can thrive.
JoyRoots is an education consulting group that partners with schools, districts, and organizations to cultivate emotionally intelligent people and systems. Our work is grounded in equity, restorative practices, and authentic human development—because thriving communities don’t happen by accident; they are intentionally built through awareness, connection, and care.
While social and emotional learning (SEL) and restorative practices have gained traction across education, too often they are reduced to tools for behavior management and compliance. This narrow approach misses the true power of emotional intelligence: the ability to understand oneself, navigate relationships, and engage the world with clarity, empathy, and purpose.
At its core, emotional intelligence is a pathway to self-discovery. It shapes how individuals come to understand their identities, their emotions, and their place within a broader community. For students—especially Black students and other students of color—this work is critical. When schools fail to nurture identity and belonging, they risk reinforcing harmful, deficit-based narratives rooted in a long history of educational inequity.
Too often, the burden of change is placed on students, while the systems and adult behaviors that shape their experiences remain unexamined. This imbalance not only limits impact—it perpetuates environments where true belonging and healing cannot take root.
At JoyRoots, we take a different approach.
We begin with adult emotional intelligence as the foundation for transformation. Because emotionally intelligent adults create emotionally intelligent environments.
Through leadership coaching, culture and climate design, and continuous improvement support, we help educators:
Deepen self-awareness and explore their own identities, beliefs, and emotional patterns
Build relational capacity rooted in empathy, trust, and accountability
Design restorative, relationship-centered school cultures
Align systems and practices with equity-centered values
Create spaces where students develop identity, agency, and a strong sense of purpose
The result is transformed school environments where students and adults experience belonging, connection, and the conditions to thrive.
